Sandwich Ant Farm Guide
Ant Dimension — Sandwich Ant Farm Setup & Care Guide
Clear, step-by-step instructions for first-time and experienced ant keepers.
What’s in the Box
- Sandwich ant farm
- Pre-mixed excavator substrate
- Liquid feeder
- Mini feeder
- Water pipette
- 25cm flexible tube to connect to other sandwich or professional nests
What You’ll Need (Not Included)
- Clean water (dechlorinated if possible)
- Isopropyl alcohol + microfiber cloth (acrylic cleaning)
Before You Start
- Location: Choose a stable, shaded spot. Avoid direct sunlight and sources of vibration.
- Level surface: A flat surface prevents water pooling and substrate slumping.
- Species check: Confirm your ant’s preferred temperature/humidity (see Environment).
First Setup: Step-by-Step
1) Clean & Prepare
- Wipe interior panels if needed with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol. Let dry fully.
2) Use the Pre-Mixed Excavator Substrate
- No mixing needed—do not alter the ratio.
- If the bag compacted during shipping, gently break up clumps with clean fingers.
3) Fill the Sandwich
- Gently spoon in the substrate, tapping the frame to settle without over-compacting.
- Leave a small expansion gap (~¼ in / 6 mm) at the top to avoid pressure on the panels.
4) Initial Hydration
- Use the pipette to add small drops of water: start with 10 to 15 doses, wait 10 to 15 minutes and then re-evaluate, until you see all the sand moist (not waterlogged).
- Target feel: evenly damp, not glossy. Slightly drier performs better—think “holds shape when squeezed, releases cleanly.”
- Signs of too much water: shiny tunnel walls, pooling at the base, or substrate slumping. If seen, pause hydration and let it equilibrate.
5) Let It Rest
Allow the nest to rest for 12–24 hours. This helps the clay set, reduces fogging, and stabilizes tunnels.
6) Introduce the Ants
- Dim the room. Open the transport tube inside the outworld/foraging area if available; let ants move at their pace.
- Optionally pre-start a small pilot tunnel (5–8 mm deep) to encourage digging in the damp side.
- Cover the nest with a dark sheet to reduce stress during the first week.
Periodic Maintenance Schedule
First Week
- Check humidity daily. Top up the hydration chamber as needed to keep one side damp (not wet).
- Offer a tiny drop of sugar water or Sunburst ant Nectar and a small protein piece (e.g., fruit fly) every 2–3 days.
Ongoing (Typical)
- Hydration: 2–3× per week (more in dry climates).
- Feeding: Carbs 1–2×/week; protein 1–3×/week (colony size dependent). Remove leftovers within 24 hours to prevent mold.
- Cleaning: Spot-clean the outworld weekly. Avoid disturbing the nest unless necessary.
- Inspection: Quick check for condensation, mold, or substrate collapse.
Monthly
- Inspect seals, screws/clips, and tube plugs.
- Refresh the humidity gradient by slightly re-wetting the “wet side.”
Seasonal
- Diapause (temperate species): Some species require a cool period. Research your species’ needs before winter.
- Substrate Refresh: If tunnels collapse repeatedly or mold persists, plan a controlled move to a fresh nest.
Feeding & Nutrition
- Carbohydrates: 1:1 sugar water. Replace frequently to avoid fermentation.
- Protein: Small pieces of insects (fruit flies, mealworms, crickets). Pre-kill and freeze insects for 24–48h to reduce mites.
- Use micro-feeders or foil squares for easy cleanup.
Temperature & Humidity
- Typical room temp: 72–78 °F (22–26 °C) suits many species.
- Humidity guide (nest zone): Desert species: 30–50%; Temperate: 50–70%; Tropical: 70–90%.
- Provide a gradient by hydrating one side more than the other; ants will relocate brood to preferred zones.
- Optional heat cable/pad may be used on one side of the outworld or back of the nest to create a warm spot—never heat the entire unit.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tunnels collapse | Too wet or nest gap too thick | Let dry slightly; hydrate in smaller doses; keep the gap within 5–9 mm for best stability. |
| Condensation/fogging | High humidity, temperature swings | Allow to equilibrate; reduce added water; avoid sun and drafts. |
| Mold spots | Food leftovers, stagnant moisture | Remove waste promptly; improve ventilation; hydrate in smaller, spaced-out amounts. |
| Flooding | Over-hydration or tilted nest | Stop adding water; tilt to move moisture away; place on a level surface. |
| Ants won’t dig | Too dry/wet, stress, bright light | Adjust moisture; pre-start a small tunnel; cover nest to reduce light. |
| Escapes | Lid ajar or no barrier in outworld | Secure lids; apply a PTFE/mineral-oil barrier to outworld walls. |
FAQ
What substrate mix does this kit use?
We use a special formula based on pure sand and clay to ensure unique structural stability.
How much water should I add?
Add small amounts 2–3× weekly, focusing on one side to keep a gradient. If tunnel walls look glossy or water pools, reduce hydration.
Can I use only sand?
We recommend sticking with our sand-clay blend. Pure sand tends to collapse or dry out too quickly.
When should I upgrade?
When traffic jams occur or brood is crowded, connect a second Sandwich nest or a larger outworld.
Heat mats/cables?
Optional. Warm only one side to create a gradient; monitor with a thermometer.
